How many of you out there have been laid off recently? It’s tough - I know!!

Not only is it a good time to work freelance or start your own company, it’s a good time to try and get your child into the modeling/acting industry. Being involved in this industry takes a LOT of time and patience, and when your child gets representation it takes a lot of running around to castings, callbacks, etc.

Tell me about your story if you’ve been laid off recently - it may be time to start your own business!

Or time to see if your CuteKid has what it takes.

More and more, the modeling/acting industry is using videos to promote people, or to hold contests.

Making a video is much like taking pictures of your child - make sure it is clear and shows personality. Usually when someone requests a video they will tell you how long it should be, so do not go over that time limit.

The beginning of the video should start with the child’s first and last name, town where he/she lives and a contact phone number. Then, I would get close-ups of his/her face, and full-length shots as well. If it is a video for talent, then it’s obvious what they will do on camera (singing, acting, etc.), but if it’s a video for modeling, the shots after the introduction and contact information should be very simple and every angle of the child, including the back (yes, modeling agencies like to see everything!). Different expressions are great - smiling, not smiling, etc.

What to wear? Keep it simple and no patterns. A bright color white is usually not good either, because it reflects back (sometimes) and causes distracting ripples on whatever article of clothing it is.

The most important part? PERSONALITY!! Your child could be beautiful, but if he/she doesn’t have personality then it doesn’t set them apart from the next “CuteKid.”

Cooper is amazing - she is witty, sharp and fun to listen to on the radio and is a psychologist with a brand new book out called “The Cult of Celebrity” - what our fascination with the stars reveals about us! click here to buy on Amazon

It’s an interesting topic, and one that most of you I’m sure have thought about when trying to get your children into the modeling/acting industry. Why ARE we so fascinated with stardom? And why do we want to get our children involved?

If you want to hear the show with Cooper interviewing me, go to her website: www.cooperlawrenceshow.com, and click on the right-hand side “on demand” or “pod casts” then look up April 16th, the 4th hour.

Or visit our link there:
Cooper Lawrence Show

TheCuteKid.com is getting discovered more and more every day!!

Wouldn’t you know it, we were all SO excited here at CuteKid to spread the wonderful news of our happy and successful members!!

This unfortunately happens all the time with the modeling/acting industries…sometimes you even do the job and they still don’t use you! Most of you know what I’m talking about - and the ones that don’t, even just going to an open call and having them fawn all over your child then never calling you is the same type of feeling.

That is why we all need to stay positive, keep doing what we’re doing and encourage and support each other just like we do on TheCuteKid.com!!

We are continually working on new opportunities for you, and as the word spreads we are getting more and more positive attention every day.

Thank-you again for all of your beautiful pictures and continued support, and we will be in touch soon for the next go around!!

Happy Holidays to everyone!!

Did anyone go to the Wilhelmina open call last Friday in New York City? How did you do?

Open calls are a GREAT WAY to get in to see an agency in person…it may be chaotic, but so is the business!

I know some of you are frustrated, because most (if not all) talent agencies do not start seeing children for acting until the age of 4 years old…but hang in there, because there is always modeling until that age!!

By the way, a tip for talent agencies - some of them have a division called “commercial print” where they will accept kids (for modeling) under 4!! The way to find out? Call them up and see or go on their website and check out what “divisions” they have.

Let me know if anyone made the Wilhelmina open call, and what your experience was!!

Are you one of those women who are constantly running around with too much to do? Does the picture above seem like a long-lost dream to you? I think that is most of us these days, overloaded with work, kids and family…when do you start taking care of YOU??

There are a few things you can start with right in your own home - the first one is to make sure and drink lots of water. You should be drinking 6 - 8 glasses a day to help cleanse your system AND reduce cellulite, along with giving your skin a fresher appearance. This is a well-known tip in the modeling industry - if you ever come across a model in New York during fashion week I guarantee you there will be a bottle of water somewhere within her reach.

Eat smaller meals more often, if you can. This helps boost your energy and speeds up your metabolism. If you work, take some healthy snacks to stick in your desk drawer to munch on during the day in between meals (raisins, nuts, dried fruit, etc.). Skipping meals is NOT the answer - eating more often in less quantites IS the answer!

Can’t find time to get to Yoga class? Get a DVD to practice at home for 20 - 30 minutes! Rodney Yee has some fantastic ones for great prices (under $15) Click here - my 4-year olds LOVE to practice with me! Get them in the habit early, they will have so much fun working out with Mommy!

Or perhaps a brisk walk once a day is more your style - in just a few weeks you will start to see results! You can alternate a walk every other day with simple floor excercises like a few push-ups, leg lifts and sit-ups. Just make sure to stretch before and after, and check with your doctor to make sure that you are ready for this kind of activity.

AND IF ALL ELSE FAILS….you can always turn to an amazing shapewear product called “Yummie Tummie!” Smooth out those trouble spots instantly: CLICK HERE for more information. Believe me, as a former editor for MORE Magazine, I’ve seen ALL the shapewear products out there, and this is one you really need to see!

Does anyone else have quick fitness tips for busy Moms? Post away!!

A lot of the questions I receive are very much like this one - where do you begin?

Well, it depends on a variety of things: your child’s age, where you live, etc. but the best place to start is your local area - besides TheCuteKid website, of course!

To procure agency/manager representation, you really have to live in the area (or about an hour away) in which you would be going on appointments with your child, or be willing to move immediately to where you send their pictures.

The talent agencies normally do not represent children under the age of 4 - there is no getting around that, it is a standard industry rule. I had to wait like everyone else - don’t you think I was DYING to get my twins representation before the age of 4 for acting? Absolutely! But I to had to wait, even though I live in the NYC area and have a ton of resources because of the location.

So if your child is younger than 4, you should focus on the modeling end of things for now - and whatever open calls you see from TheCuteKid website. Google “model agency your town” and start researching! Call the agencies you find, and ask questions - is there a fee to join, do they have a children’s division, where can you send your pictures?

The modeling and acting industries are hard WORK - and once you get representation, it’s even more work going on all of the auditions, callbacks and the preparation it takes. The “overnight success” phrase is a myth, spun by the media to make celebrities seem all that more intriguing.

If your child is older than 4 and you want to get them into acting, then you should start having them participate in school plays, acting camp, workshops for kids and that type of thing. Acting takes more of an investment at first than modeling does - you can get away with sending in casual snapshots to a modeling agency (even after joining the agency you can use use non-professional pictures depending on their age), but after a child is past a certain age for acting you will be looking into getting a profesesional head shot, resume, etc.

I hope this helps, the fact that you are reading this shows that you are moving in the right direction! Learn, learn, learn - knowledge is power in this industry to avoid falling into the hands of the wrong people.
